"Save me" by Sue Peake copyright 1994

The stark crazed eyes of the sadist fixed on me.
There was a hideous smile on his lips.
I was terrified, trapped -
nowhere to run, no place to hide.

The light in the chamber was so sharp.
It shone on the instruments of torture
with a frightening clarity,
making them gleam with menace,
cold metal shining with spite.

I saw the dark hairs of his nostrils.
Glimpsed his deep frown.
Beads of sweat clung to his forehead.
Pleasure showed in his eyes -
I stared back, pleading in mine.
He chose to ignore it.

Was there no-one to help me?
I was struck dumb,
tried to rise, but my limbs turned to jelly.
The sun even reached inside this
dismal chamber of torture,
mocking me with its brightness.

Outside in the street I heard footsteps,
life carried on regardless.
I could not believe it -
were those people out there
really unaware of my plight?

He bent nearer.
I felt his garlic breath on my cheek.
He reached for the drill.
" Open wider please ", he snarled.
